WEEKLY REMINDER (14 – 2011)

Here is another quote similar to last week, again the author is anonymous.

If you don’t have an effective business system, you are the system. Instead of having a business, you have a glorified job. You will never escape the technical trenches of your business. You will always be “busy being busy.”

If you confuse accomplishment with activity, you will never get the most important things done.  Make sure you structure your time to get what is important done.

WEEKLY REMINDER (13 – 2011)

Here is a business quote I found the other day, my apology to the author, there was no one mentioned.  All I know is that it is not mine and it is a good reminder.

Your ultimate business goal – to design a highly profitable business that runs smoothly, predictably, and automatically while you own it and is worth a fortune when you sell it.

Remember this, execute it and you’ll be fine.

WEEKLY REMINDER (12 – 2011)

The number one complaint from followers about a leader is inappropriate use of communications and listening.  Leaders often communicate through outbursts, blaming and anger.  I am betting that coworkers do the same thing with each other and communication can be a problem throughout a person’s work life.  Whenever you feel like letting someone have it, for whatever reason, remember that once emotional paste is out of the tube, it is very difficult to put back in.  It is much better to hold your tongue, think about what you want to say, and say it in a impactful but appropriate way.  It is like a poster I saw on an organizational wall the other day, I’ll clean it up a bit, but it basically said, “Be careful of whose feet you are stepping on today, because tomorrow they might have the behind you need to kiss.  Not a bad thing to remember frankly.

WEEKLY REMINDER (11 – 2011)

The designation as a leader is earned from subordinates, peers, and superiors.  Those who follow define the leader.  You can have good and bad leaders, formal and informal.  If your formal leader is not effective, many times an informal leader can take over the work group.  The problem is that they many times are worse than the bad formal leader.

Most of leadership is about getting the people sitting on the fence to step into your field as opposed to dropping to the side of negativity.  It is important to find these fence sitter and do things to win them over.

WEEKLY REMINDER (10 – 2011)

From Human Performance Theory:  About 80 percent of all events are attributed to human error. In some industries, this number is closer to 90 percent. Roughly 20 percent of occurrences involve equipment failures. When the 80 percent human error is broken down further, it reveals that the majority of errors associated with events stem from latent organizational weaknesses (perpetrated by humans in the past that lie dormant in the system), whereas about 30 percent are caused by the individual worker touching the equipment and systems in the facility.  Clearly, focusing efforts on reducing human error will reduce the likelihood of occurrences and events.

WEEKLY REMINDER (9 – 2011)

It takes a lot of energy to be negative.  Frowning takes 64 muscles while smiling takes 13.  It takes almost 5 times as many muscles to stay in a bad mood.  I wonder if you hate your job and your boss and you come into work frowning every day for a year, who does that harm the most, especially if your boss is smiling all the while?  Yes, your guess is the same as mine, it harms you and your family much more than your boss and organization.

Don’t love your job or make the best of it for your boss or the company.  Do it for you.  It is the healthiest thing you can do.  That, or go find a new boss or job.

WEEKLY REMINDER (8 – 2011)

Comfort can become a prison.  Ever hear of a comfort zone.  It can have powerful bars that keep you from saying or experiencing new concepts and experiences.  Make sure you step out in the yard every so often and over the fence to new freedom.  Anxiety and nervousness aren’t always bad, they can be indicators that you are taking some risk.  It is OK to risk, just don’t bet the farm or your left hand.

WEEKLY REMINDER (6 – 2011)

No choice makes us neurotic, because we all make our own choices.

A presentation by David Rock on the Neuroscience of Engagement talks about the drivers of engagement and explains that the brain likes to be able to predict and have a say in the future.  It likes Autonomy.  A feeling of having a choice dramatically impacts stress levels.

Try to use conscious choice in the situations you face for the next week.  Prevent the “knee jerk” response and use a conscious choice to be assertive, unassertive or aggressive.  Do what you think is right…according to you.

WEEKLY REMINDER (5 – 2011)

Trust is like impulse; you just do it.  Certain regions in the brain are stimulated when we associate primary rewards like pleasant touch or memories or a picture of a loved one.  As leaders, we need to learn to re-trust these.  More and more research is demonstrating the positive impact of social and relationship management as the most important aspect of successful leadership.
